2016 Toyota Tundra 4x2 Trims & Overview

The 2016 Toyota Tundra 4x2 comes in numerous styles. This full-sized pickup seats up to five people, and it's well suited to work, but it also has creature comforts for casual motorists. Here are some insights that might make it easier to choose from the available combinations.

What's New in the 2016 Model?

The Tundra line has been around for a while. Since the early 2000s, it's undergone numerous evolutions and modifications. Updates for the 2016 model year include:

• Updated electronics interfaces,
• Bigger fuel tanks,
• Standard integrated control for trailer braking systems, and
• Optional front-end design upgrades.

Which Styles Can Drivers Pick From?

The Tundra 4x2 is available with a choice of a Regular, Double or CrewMax cab, so it's possible to customize how much room occupants have. Users don't have to feel restricted when it comes to cargo space either, because there are multiple standard and long bed options.

Notably, 2016 Tundra 4x2 models are available as FFVs, or Flex Fuel Vehicles. These trucks can reputedly compensate for ethanol content in fuels and use them interchangeably with regular gas. At the time of its introduction, this feature was only deployed in certain geographic regions.

Picking a Trim

The 2016 Toyota Tundra is available in SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition and TRD Pro trims. All but the TRD Pro offer 4x2 options.

Most SR Double and Regular Cab vehicles come with 5.7L V8 engines, although there is one 4.6L Double Cab option. Motorists can also select long or standard bed sizes. Even as the low-end model, the SR incorporates keyless entry, a touchscreen system and cruise control.

Upgrading to the SR5 affords buyers a few more options. These include Double Cab models with 4.6L or 5.7L V8 engines and standard or long beds. There are also 4.6L and 5.7L V8 CrewMax combinations available. This basic-yet-functional trim package comes equipped with:

• Fog lights,
• Chrome bumpers, and
• A sliding rear window.

With the Limited, 4x2 drivers can choose from CrewMax or Double Cabs, although only the 5.7L V8 engine and standard beds are available. In addition to 20-inch alloy wheels, Limited vehicles also include a number of interior conveniences, such as dual-zone automatic climate control and heated seats.

The Platinum and 1794 4x2 trims are only fitted with CrewMax cabs and 5.7L V8 engines. These vehicles are both available as FFV variants. The 1794 model evokes a more classic style with earth tones and special exterior designs. The Platinum modernizes the Tundra aesthetic with features like:

• A sunroof,
• Ventilated seating, and
• LED running lights.

Fuel Economy and Utility

Reviewers have noted that the gas mileages of Tundra vehicles aren't the best on the market. Options like FFV and other upgrades might not make that much of a difference to those whose states haven't rolled out widespread ethanol-bearing fuel standards. On the other hand, 38 gallons of fuel volume, high towing capacities and the ability to stay stable on and off-road are definite pluses.
